Basic IT and Communication training:
WOMEC offers a 12 weeks beginner course to women at grassroots level. We set the following objectives for the training:

  • to empower women with the power of the new technologies;
  • to bring more awareness among the women about the existence of women’s actions in their countries and internationally;
  • to give them the skills of contributing to a larger discussion and campaign for gender equality

By the end of the 12 weeks, the participants will be comfortably using all the physical components of the computer through powering on and off the machine, moving and clicking the mouse, typing on the keyboard and recognizing and connecting external devices to the unit.
They will be able to navigate freely through Window Explorer, understanding fully the concept of the desktop, the folders and files.
As a beginning of digital communication, they will have no worries to type a letter to their bank, an essay for their studies or create a birthday card or event flyer, using all the main functions of Microsoft Word 2007.
And finally to connect to the world via internet, the participants will have had set up an email for themselves, will surf online to search information, will exchange messages through the social networks Facebook or Twitter and will launch the first blog of WOMEC, contributing already to the online debate about women in Ghana.

This training is available for group of 8 women. We are currently looking for women to form the next group of participants.
If you have a group of friends, if you know a group of women in your church or your school who are eager to learn about computers, please call 0302-414494 or come to our offices, No.10 Joe Reindorf Street, Parakuo Estate, Dome, Accra.

Online Media and communication skills:
Blogging, social networking, news feed, YouTube, web design

WOMEC would like to offer to any women working in the media, involved in politics or active in the field of gender, an introductory training on the power of the online media with the opportunity of spreading messages and exchanging globally.
The course objectives are set as follows:

  • To facilitate meeting between the practitioners in gender action and the journalists who would report to the public on those issues
  • To provide the Women’s practitioners with the skills and the power of the online media, in order to communicate their actions, enhance their images and make sure their messages are well spread and well communicated.
  • To give the practitioners the opportunity for an online spot, through facebook, blogs or websites. Giving their campaigns, their actions a global place.
  • To open a forum on how to increase the place of the women on the internet

A three full days workshop where the participants will learn how to use all the powerful tools of the internet. Will be reminded how important is to communicate with emails today. Along with the emails, an organisation should have a regularly updated website with exact details and detailed events and activities related to the work. The course will show to the participants how easy it is to create and run a personal or professional blog. And finally to join the debate and link up with the other 1000 organisations in the world and attract thousands of members, the training will give an introduction on the social networks and their utilisation.
A regular use of emails, an updated website, a facebook or twitter page as well as a blog will modernise the image of the organisation or the politician, will throw them in the centre of the world next to many other organisations based somewhere else. In the online world, there is no borders anymore, no dominant or dominated countries, we are all at the same pace, rhythm if someone is giving itself the skills to be there. And finally having a place in the online world will attract funders and volunteers from anywhere in the world. But we have to put effort into it. We can’t have a website that was last updated years ago, a facebook page who is only updated once in a while and an email who is checked every few months.
A look-out on how other organisations use the media, the online tools will be one of the activity during the workshop.

WOMEC organizational objectives:
Organize ICT training for Women Parliamentarians and Women NGO Representatives
Create a forum for networking between media practitioners and groups working in the field of gender through seminars, workshops and publications;

While Womec treats the general field of Gender equality and ethics in the work place, gender organisation specialised in specific gender issues, would treat the other subjects such as leadership, the economy and HIV, so that a forum can be created between the journalist and the gender practitioners, specialists in their own fields.
