WOMEC APPLAUDS NEWLY ELECTED FEMALE MPs
Women, Media and Change (WOMEC) congratulates all female Members of Parliament (MPs) elected during Ghana’s general elections and wishes to acknowledge their hard work and determination through the electoral process. We hope that during their term of office, they will be sensitive to gender issues and actively participate in the quest to promote female involvement in governance.

WOMEC is however dissatisfied with the low number of females elected as MPs. This is a reflection of the uneven platform on which women have to compete squarely with men in politics in Ghana. At the national level little has been done to implement international documents such as the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the African Union Solemn Declaration on Gender Equity and the Protocol on the Right of Women to the African Charter, all meant to provide a common platform for women’s participation in politics.

Additionally, political parties in Ghana have failed to put in place favourable measures that will allow more women to sieve through their primaries and stand for elections. Even when women are given positions it is only a form of tokenism to avoid criticism from women groups in the country.

WOMEC pledges its untiring support to the female MPs elect and look forward to collaborating with them.
