FIDA educates community on human rights issues |
|
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana) has organized a one-day mobile programme for the chiefs and people of Aweregya near Nkawkaw. The objective of the programme was to educate and explain human rights issues to members of the community. Additionally, FIDA explained various fundamental laws dealing with discriminatory practices in the society and issues regarding the protection of the rights of women and children. They were also educated on family and marriage laws, intestate succession, violence against women and children as well as the preparation and implementation of a Will.
The Executive Director of FIDA-Ghana, Mrs. Jane Quaye, in her address advised couples to register their marriages at the courts and district assemblies to enable women and children to benefit from their husband's estate. She said under the PNDC law 111, the wife and children should benefit from the deceased husband’s estate if he died intestate. Mrs. Quaye said anybody above 18 years could make a Will to state how his estate should be distributed after his death. She advised married men to avoid human rights abuses against women and advised them to seek divorce so that the woman could have her peace. Source: GNA |
