Past Activities/Programs undertaken by WOMEC

Since its inception in 1994, WOMEC has successfully undertaken a number of activities as indicated below:

  • June 2007, WOMEC organised a capacity building workshop for 20 female journalists from both private and public media houses in Ghana. The workshop was aimed at building the capacity of female journalists to enable them report from a gender perspective.

  • June 2007, WOMEC coordinated SOAWR public forum toward the African Union (AU) Summits held in Accra, Ghana to ensure that the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa remains on the agenda of policy makers and to urge all African leaders to safeguard the rights of women through ratification and implementation of the Protocol.

  • The April 2007- WOMEC with sponsorship from Malaria Clinical Trials Alliance organized a second Media Training Workshop on Reporting on Malaria Research in Africa for 20 Journalist from across Africa. It was held in Mombasa-Kenya.
  • April 2007, WOMEC organized a field trip to Dodowa Health Research Centre for 10 journalists to acquaint themselves with researches going on at the centre. Journalists acquired first hand information on current researches underway in the District

  • November 2006 - WOMEC in partnership with INDEPTH Network/ Malaria Clinical Trials Alliance (MCTA) organized a five day Media Training Workshop on Malaria Research Reporting in Africa for 20 Journalist from across Africa.
  • November 2006- WOMEC co-founded African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) - a network of African journalists and scientists working together to eradicate malaria in Africa. Participating journalists and scientists are from — The Gambia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania. Read more about AMMREN on www.ammren.org.

  • August 2006 – WOMEC worked with six women living with HIV to produce radio diaries. Six radio journalists were trained to partner with HIV positive women to act as mentors and to assist with the production of radio diaries of women living with HIV. The project is with support from INTERNEWS, USA. Read about INTERNEWS on www.internews.org.
  • April 2006- Launched the first edition of “The Female Parliamentarian”. The Newsletter was produced and published by WOMEC with support from ActionAid International and UNDP-Ghana.

  • April 2006-WOMEC with support from CIDA, DANIDA/Abantu for Development organized the first phase of workshop for 35 journalists from 5 regions of Ghana on the Promotion of Women’s Participation in Local Governance.
  • June 2006-WOMEC with support from CIDA, DANIDA/ABANTU for Development organized the second phase of workshop for 35 journalists from 5 regions of Ghana on the promotion of women in local governance.
  • September 2005, WOMEC as a nominee for an award at the Pan African Women’s Invent and Innovate Conference. (PAWII) in the “Capacity Building Initiatives and Projects” Division, put up a stand at the PAWII exhibition. The theme was “Celebrating Women in ICT”.
  • In 2004 WOMEC, in collaboration with UN System Gender Program with support from CIDA-Ghana conducted a Three-Day workshop that brought together 25 media personnel (drawn from the Northern Belt) from both the print and electronic
  • media to sensitize journalists to promote gender mainstreaming in media coverage against the Background of the Women’s Manifesto for Ghana.
  • In 2004 WOMEC, again in collaboration with UN System Gender Program with support from CIDA-Ghana conducted a Three-Day workshop that brought together 25 media personnel (drawn from the Southern Belt) from both the print and electronic media to sensitize journalists to promote gender mainstreaming in media coverage against the Background of the Women’s Manifesto for Ghana.
  • In 2003 WOMEC organized a Reflection Seminar for female parliamentarians with the aim of developing media skills, tools and practices for effective participation of women in parliament. Funding was from the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy
  • 2004, WOMEC, with support from UN System Gender Program conducted a Training workshop for 50 media practitioners from six regions on Mainstreaming Gender Coverage in Elections 2004.
  • In 2003, WOMEC in collaboration with Prolink Organization and funding from Action Aid, Ghana organized a training workshop for media personnel. The workshop was aimed at training media personnel on correct media reporting on HIV/AIDS.
  • WOMEC also in 2003, produced IE&C materials for the Society of Women Against AIDS in Africa (SWAA-Ghana) and the DANIDA Female Condom Use Promotion Project
  • In 2000, WOMEC conducted media skills training for female parliamentary candidates in the December 2000 elections in Ghana. The training focused on effective use of the media in campaigns and presentation techniques. It was sponsored by The U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana,
  • In 1998, WOMEC was engaged by the Centre for Development of People (CEDEP), an NGO, to train District Assembly members and service providers in the Ashanti Region on incorporating gender issues into district level planning. Role-plays which formed part of the training were recorded on video and have since been part of CEDEP’s gender sensitization training kit.
  • WOMEC in 1996 co-produced a Trainer of Trainers Manual for Environmental Education and Training for Savannah Ecosystem Management for UNESCO, which is being used extensively in Africa.
